- Abstract:
- Governance of the commons depends on the level of social capital embedded on the norms and networks. Among these norms and networks, relations of trust; reciprocity and exchanges; common rules, norms, and sanctions; and connectedness in networks and groups are positively related to collective action for a sustainable governance of the commons with particular reference to soil conservation groups; watershed and catchment management groups; irrigation and water users' groups; forest management; and grazing land management groups. The general lessons of this review reveals that low levels of social capital are found to be related to poor outcomes of natural resource condition and vice versa. Finally, these lessons posed me to raise the question ‘what then can be done to create new and to capitalize the existing social capital of resource users for common pool natural resources improvement
