Abstract:
Field experiments were conducted at three locations of A/Tsibla district, northern Ethiopia to evaluate different rates of Yaramila fertilizer on production and productivity of teff. Using improved variety (Kuncho DZ-01-Cross 387) as a test crop and five treatments (Control, Recommended NP, Yaramila @ 150 kg ha-1, Yaramila @ 200 kg ha-1 and Yaramila @ 200 kg ha-1 + K2O5 @ 50 kg ha-1 + adjusted NP) the experiments were laid out in Randomized Complete Block design with three replications. Data on yield and yield components of teff were collected and subjected to Analysis of Variance using SAS software. Results revealed that the number of total tillers and productive tillers were not significantly different due to application of different rates of YaraMila at Hintset and Lemlem, but varied at E/Guna. Application of 200 kg ha-1 YaraMila + 50 kg ha-1 K2SO4 + adjusted NP (T5) and the conventional recommendation of NP (T2) were on par and gives a significantly higher plant height, panicle length and biomass and grain yields of teff, with respect to other rates of Yaramila and control plots. Additionally, poor vegetative growth and yields of teff were recorded for control plots at all locations. This indicates that the experimental soils have limitations in releasing major soil nutrients in adequate amount to support teff growth without an external addition of nutrients. Therefore, application of 200 kg ha-1 YaraMila + 50 kg ha-1 K2SO4 + adjusted NP and the conventional recommendation of NP can bring about significant production of teff in similar soil types.
