Abstract:
The study was conducted to investigate the impact of salinity levels on seed germination and seedling growth characteristics of sunflower (Helianthus annuus L.). Laboratory experiment was conducted using Sunflower seeds obtained from the Ministry of Agriculture, Central Darfur State, Sudan. Twenty seeds were germinated in Petri dish contains filter paper of 9 cm diameter. Treatments comprised of control 0% (distilled water), 0.5%, 1.0%, 1.5% and 2% of sodium chloride (NaCl). Treatments were arranged in completely randomized design (CRD) with 4 replications. Data recorded were subjected to analysis of variance (ANOVA).Least Significant Differences (LSD) method was used to test differences between treatments means at 5% and 1% probability levels. Results of variance analysis revealed that salinity made significant difference on most considered characteristics. Number of germinated seeds was significantly affected by salinity level, especially by the higher salt concentrations. The less number of germinated seeds during the germination period was obtained at 2% (4.7-18) compared with the control (0%) which recorded (17.3-20). Germination percentage decreased with increasing salinity level .The highest seed germination percentage (100%) was observed in 0% (control) and 0.5% NaCl. The lower percentage (90%) was found with 2% NaCl concentration. plumule length decreased significantly (p ≤ 0.05) as concentration of NaCl increased. Seedling vigor index decreased with increasing salinity level. Seedling vigor index decreased in 2% NaCl concentration by 49.5% from control, while the reduction in the other treatments from control were 11.7%,5.8%and 2.9% in 1.5%,1% and0.5%NaCl respectively.
